Sensor Technologies
REAL sensor platforms transmit data over a hierarchical, wireless sensor network to bridge large distances while conserving overall sensor network power. Data is initially delivered to a sensor server for storage and relay to remote servers or grid services for further analysis and processing to better enable ecological inquiry.

Shown in Figure 1a is a sensor cluster comprising several sensor platforms and a sensor server. Each sensor platform (Figure 1b) collects data at pre-programmed times with minimal site disturbance or regular human intervention. The platform comprises a pole-mounted sensor unit (Figure 1c) and a solar panel coupled with a deep cycle battery for providing power over extended periods. Acoustic clips are collected by the sensor units and transmitted over a wireless network to a laptop (sensor server - Figure 1d) in a protected enclosure, for temporary storage and later relay to REAL regional servers for further analysis and processing to facilitate soundscape interpretation. The sensor system described here and others are being regularly improved and enhanced as new technologies become available.
